As a department, they have been in the media spotlight for negative reasons also including the riots of 1991 which were triggered by the acquittal of four police officers for assaulting a black motorist named Rodney King which saw several days of protests, violence and looting in Los Angeles. All over the world, we are familiar with the LAPD as this unique police department mainly through the lens of countless movies and TV series. Choosing to participate in a ride along in a different jurisdiction would be an opportunity for me to engage in stretching my own thinking and comfort zone, and it definitely provided me with fresh and rich insights. In considering my professional practice as a teacher with a commitment to investigative practice and criminal justice, I realised that much of my work involves asking crime managers to challenge their thinking and push themselves to look at issues from new and perhaps uncomfortable angles. Sometimes an attempt at crossing a border to expose new methods or redefining margins can lead to other opportunities to do so in even more profound ways. I find it difficult to categorise this as a personal narrative of my observations or an attempt to engage with the law’s and practices of the LAPD in comparison to An Garda Síochána (AGS) but either way here goes! This article details some of the events of the evening from my first-person perspective and is threaded with legal and policing analyses of various facets of the experience that emerged. ![]() In this observational piece, I hope to encapsulate my experience of a recent trip to California where for one night I abandoned my family holiday and accompanied the Metro Squad of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in the 77 th Street precinct. ![]() On a daily basis police officers all over the world deal with a broad spectrum of horrendous exposures which are both violent and traumatic. The experience left an indelible mark on him, which he described as an ‘awakening’ to the realities of life. In preparation for a recent role American movie star, Jake Gyllenhaal revealed how time spent with working police officers and seeing their difficult interactions close up in the southeast of Los Angeles was life changing. ![]()
